Cork Trivets

$5.00

Make you wonder, don’t they? This up-cycled trivet is ideal for putting under a plant to protect your table or floor, thus it earns a spot on the Sedum & Sage Goodies List. However, it is equally happy under a hot dish, or to accompany the gift of a bottle of wine, perhaps in a basket, or simply as a conversation piece.

In case of the latter, you may want to know more. My dad and I spent a bit of time at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado together one summer. My brother had left for USNA and Mom was helping her parents. Dad is by most measures, an extraordinary person, however craftiness, in terms of scissors and glue isn’t his forte. Nevertheless, I came home from my taxing job at the Hotel del Coronado Chocolate Shop to find him hot-gluing corks into this pattern. I followed his lead for all future cork trivets and only made brief forays into other cork arts (wreath gifted to my parents who hang the behemoth on their door to welcome guests to a wine tastings. Let me know if you need one.) (SIDE BAR: I was just treated to a glimpse of fine artistry by Claire Terry of Hangen Ranch, who created a bar top landscape mimicking her astounding view of Mt. Evans, entirely from corks. Maybe she’ll send me a picture to share!) Alas, it was one of the most noteworthy aspects of the Summer of ‘92, that and the scotch sampler Dad shared with me. Anyway, you probably need at least three!
